STMS Category A + B (non-practising)

Overview

Training Pathway:  TTM Worker  ⇒  TMO-NP  ⇒  STMS-Universal  ⇒  STMS CAT A & B NP

Connexis - Unit Standard ref: 31962

This course provides the base knowledge for working on Category A and/or B road environments. It is a 1-day theory course for each of the Category A or B non-practising components. We also offer a 1.5-day combined Category A & B non-practising course, for those who require both categories.

Once you have completed this course, you can arrange for the onsite STMS Practical Assessment
Please note: until you have completed and achieved the STMS Practising Assessment for each road category (i.e. CAT A, B, or C) you will be non-practising only and cannot act as an STMS in charge of a TTM site.

Others who move to TTMP, Auditor, etc can complete the theory component/s only (not the onsite practical assessments) as you only need the theory courses to progress.

Topics include:

Category A:
  • Deliver site safety briefings and inductions
  • Calculate layout distances for Category A road environments
  • Set up, maintain and remove TTM for static operations (shoulder closures, two-way two-lane closures and multi-lane closures)
  • Complete mobile operations and closures
  • Set up, maintain, and remove TTM for semi-static operations and closures
  • Conduct special activities

Category B :
  • Deliver site safety briefings and inductions
  • Calculate layout distances for category B road environments
  • Set up, maintain, and remove TTM for static operations including shoulder closures, lane closures, lane diversions, and ramp closures
  • Complete mobile operations and closures
  • Conduct special activities.

Who should attend?

Any person wishing to work on Category A and/or B roads as an onsite STMS, or any person wishing to work on category A and/or B roads while fulfilling one of these roles; Traffic Operations Manager, TTM Mentor, TTM Assessor, TTM Trainer, TTM Planner, TMP Approver, TTM Auditor, Traffic Management Coordinator or Corridor Manager.

Prerequisites

The STMS Universal warrant is the minimum prerequisite to attend this course. For those wishing to gain the practising STMS Cat A and/ or B warrant, they must first hold the practising TMO warrant.

An onsite STMS is also required to have endorsements for specific activities/specialist TTM equipment (eg portable traffic signals, VMS) if they oversee operations using these and there is no other worker on-site with the required endorsements.

Warrant

At the end of this learning block attendees will have acheived the following non-practising warrants:

  • STMS (A) -NP. This is required to go on and achieve the practising warrant, STMS (A).
  • STMS (B) -NP. This is required to go on and achieve the practising warrant, STMS (B).

Duration & Type of Learning

STMS Cat A - NP (only): 1-day knowledge/theory workshop delivered by a TTM Trainer
STMS Cat B- NP (only): 1-day knowledge/theory workshop delivered by a TTM Trainer
STMS Cat A + B - NP (combined): 1.5-days knowledge/theory workshop delivered by a TTM Trainer

This is followed by on-the-job coaching from a TTM Mentor for those wishing to gain the STMS practising warrant.

Assessment

The assessment for this warrant occurs progressively
during the workshop.

Refresher

Every 3 years attendees will need to refresh their STMS-NP warrant. To renew this they will need to attend the STMS NP Refresher workshop. This will include any CoPTTM changes and is delivered by a TTM Trainer.

The STMS Practising warrant is renewed once the STMS Cat A and/or B Practical Re-Assessment has been successfully completed. The practising warrant will expire on the same date as the non-practising warrant.
